The Dominion Building

The 14 storey Dominion Building at the corner of Hastings and Cambie Streets, also known as the
Dominion Bank Building, was built in 1910. This trapezoidal building is Vancouver 's first steel-framed high
rise and, at the time of its construction, it was the tallest building in the British Empire. Originally built to house
the Dominion Trust, which later became the Dominion Bank, the building is situated in what was once the
heart of the city's financial district. Today, it is a designated heritage building that houses the offices of various
businesses, including several non-profit organizations.
Tragically, the Dominion Building's architect, J.S. Hellyer, is said to have tripped, fallen and died on the
interior staircase during the opening party for the building. His ghost reportedly haunts the staircase. His footsteps are
heard on the steps between the seventh and eighth floors. His apparition has been seen there, too. |
